IF you can find a place with the stuff...

walnut shells will give you a nice finish.
Plastic or nylon pellets will do fine.
Baking soda works nicely too and is non-toxic!

Stay away from SAND! Will leave a coarse finish.
Glass beads will do OK, but will also leave a coarse finish although
less
rough than the sand.....

Nothing else that I am aware of that will give you a smooth finish....

IF you find a place.... have them do some piece of aluminum something or
other, even a piece of flat plate... to see what the finish will be!!
