 Is it known if this car was converted to PB? I've seen cars numbered lower 
than 1100 that had rect handles that I'm sure were converted to that.

Tomas... no, #2178 was not converted to PB...  the likely scenario is that 
the body was pulled off the line, before the VIN was affixed, for some reason 
(test mule, etc),
and later on was put back on the line.
