My original starter had problems too to turn the engine when hot. I bought a reduction-gear-starter from Hall, and the problems were gone. After going to 10.6:1 compression, on rare occasions, the problem would come back. I then custom-made a heat-shield, made of stainless steel, that shields the starter from the heat of the exhaust tubes. I've mounted the heat-shield on an exhaust tube with an ordinary exhaust clamp. Works well, and it isn't visible unless you're crawling around under the car.
