| Subject: | Argh - Pete Jackson Gear drive help needed |

Hi all,
I know some of you have installed a Pete Jackson gear drive set in you
351C. Well, I got to that very point yesterday and found.... I couldn't do
it with the stock fuel pump eccentric setup.
The Stock fuel pump eccentric in a Cleveland consists of two pieces, an
outer shell that is allowed to move freely, thus reducing wear by a
significant magnitute, and an inner shell that is bolted to the face of
timing gear. The stock timing gear set (and most aftermarket chain drives)
are set up so that the outer shell moves freely; the inner shell sitting on
a small ledge at the center of the gear. I've got photos but need to shoot
the rest of the roll before I can publish them.
The Pete Jackson gear drive has a totally flat-faced cam gear. There is no
legde for the inner shell to ride on, allowing the outer shell to spin freely.
Here are my options:
1 - Use a washer between the inner shell and the gear to create the ledge I
need. This would also move the locating tab out of the hole a small amount
and "could" cause it to fail at some point possibly allowing the fuel pump
eccentric to NOT do it's job anymore. (I don't like this option)
2 - Sandwich the outter shell with the inner shell, against the gear drive.
This maintains the proper diameter for the eccentric, but does not allow
it to spin freely independent of the inner shell (this is getting hard to
picture, isn't it), it also requires that the inner shell be distorted to
meet the cam gear, thus throwing off all my torque readings, possibly
leading to bolt failure, gear coming off, bumps, grinds, zizzes, etc..
(not an option)
3 - Toss the outer eccentric and allow the fuel pump to ride on the inner.
A small diameter loss is had, and the idea of reducing wear is gone as
well. (best of the three so far)
4 - have an appropriate shelf machined in the face of the cam gear, thereby
allowing the outer eccentric to move/spin freely, while allowing the inner
eccentric to be securely bolted to the face of the gear drive. (best
alternative)
5 - Can the whole thing, and go with an electric fuel pump. Does anyone
make a fuel pump block off for the 351C?
What I want to know, is how did anyone else attach the fuel pump eccentric
to thier Pete Jackson gear drive setup? This is driving me nuts. I'm
stupified I didn't notice this earlier. Please help. I'm held up because
of this at the moment.
Thanks,
Asa Jay
