Hi Nolan:
Easy one! I'll skip the 351C (for obvious reasons). The 351M is not the 351W.
What it is is a destroked 400 (the "M" standing for Modified). The 351W is the
Windsor (standing for the location of the Windsor plant in Canada someplace). I
would say that one would call it a taller 302 but I've heard differently. In
any event, once smog started to kill off the 351C, Detomaso looked for an
alternative and found it in the 351W. If you want more of that, there is a
description of a P-car owner shoehoring the 351W into his Pantera. Find it on
the Detomaso webring. Really interesting site.
Oh yeah, one final thing regarding RPM limitations on the 3" journals of the
351M400, 351W and the 429/460. Apparently, (at least from the 429/460
standpoint), these larger journal engines could be run up to 7500 rpm with no
problems (though I've also been told these engines should have a forged
crank...that I don't know). And, I think Ford Motorsport does carry a cast iron
SVO (Windsor) block with the smaller Cleveland main journals (thats about
2.749"). Investigate that if you are interested. Cal. #2428r.
