That sounds like your steering rack needs a (new) brass bushing.  If you
move the wheel back and forth (it's better with someone holding the steering
wheel still), and look at the end of the rack body, does the tie rod seem to
be wiggling in the rack?  If so, search the archives for one of Mike Drew's
excellent brass bushing write-ups.  

BTW, the bushing failure will only let the wheel wiggle horizontally - if
you can wiggle the wheel vertically as well, then you have a different
problem, like a wheel bearing.

Has the car been sitting alot?  Make certain the brake caliper piston isn't
frozen in the bore by trying to pry the brake pads off the rotor.  They
should grudgingly move.
