Eric,
Dash removal is fairly straightforward. The early dashboards are held in
place with about five or six bolts, while the later ones use even fewer bolts.
It's been awhile since I removed mine, but as I recall, there were one or two
bolts on each side, and then some bolts (or sheetmetal screws?) which go
through brackets right at the base of the windshield. All you have to do is
lie on your back underneath the car and look up, and you should (eventually)
spot them all. At least one is hidden behind the heater box and requires some
effort to remove. There is a LOT of junk in the way (wires, defroster ducts,
heater cables, steering column, etc. etc. etc.) There are also sheet metal
screws along the underside of the dash which screw into metal brackets, and
don't forget that the center console is also screwed to the underside of the
dash.
REMOVE THE POSITIVE BATTERY LEAD before you start screwing around; there's a
LOT of wires underneath there that are hot at all times, and when you're
shoving things here and there, it's easy to cause unwanted spritzensparken
mit smokenflamen und fuzenmelten!
Good luck!
Mike
