Steve,
I use a combo of water, "Pencool" and Redline WaterWetter. The Pencool
(used to be called NalCool) is used almost universally
by truckers here in the US; indeed, it is recommended by Cummings
and Caterpiller. It provides no anti-freeze properties (since when does it
freeze here in San Diego, but NZ may be another matter), but
excels in its lubricant and anti-rust properties. Cost is considerably less
than a oil-change with synthetic oils. I "top up"
the system with a quart of Pencool and pint of Water Wetter every year, and
fluch the system every few years. I havn't had a problem, the car runs cool
even on a mid-day banzai run to Vegas, and the system does not show any
sludge/rust when I flush it.
This tip came from Sass (toyfororv@aol.com) who has been using it for years.
