Cal,
Installing tapered bearings in your uprights is not a simple job
because there is no boss or step for a bearing seat for the inner
bearing cup. The vendors cut a groove for an internal snap ring and use
this as a bearing seat. Unless you have access to a 12" or larger lathe
or a milling machine with a rotary table you won't be able to cut the
groove. I just posted the bearing, seal and snap ring part numbers less
than a month ago. Check the archives. I have made CAD drawings
illustrating four different methods people I know have used to make the
conversion. If I can find some time I'll write an article for one of the
club publications describing these conversions. If you devise another
way, please let me know and I'll include it.
