Now there is no remaining evidence as to where they originally connected.
Any and all hints would be appreciated.
>>>Check the front of the motor--there are gozinta and gozouta ports on the front of the motor (one is on the water pump) and I'm sure you'll find there's a bypass hose that connects these two ports. Either that, or somebody has fitted an aftermarket racing water pump that doesn't have a provision for a heater port???
Once you determine that, then you need to figure out which of the two hanging hoses should be connected to the pressure side (gozouta) and which should be the return line (gozinta.) Your factory shop manual (you DO have one of those right?) has an excellent diagram.

3/8 inch with a 12" long piece of tubing connected but it is simple blocked
off with a bolt. Any ideas what someone might have had connected here at
some time?
>>>For awhile, the brainiacs at DeTomaso and/or Ford thought that you could take advantage of this high point in the cooling system and bleed air off the system. The hose ran from the radiator, down underneath the car, and then up and into the overflow tank I believe? At some point people figured out that air would have a tough time falling down two feet, moving backwards six feet and then up three feet, and later cars had this bleed port simply capped off as yours is.
