Subject: Sonic Tester
The sonic testers I "think" you are referring to are sold by companies such
as Mitutoyo, aka MTI. They are most commonly found in the aerospace field
and in job shops that work castings. I have not worked in the automotive
field so I am making an assumption we are talking the about the same thing.
And we all know what they say about assumptions. ;-)
The ones I am familiar with are self calibrating and just require a special
lube to insure a good sonic connection. I wish I had known the interest in
them as I sold a new one to a friend a while back along with some other
equipment. There is a chance I can get it back for a fraction of it's
original cost. I worked for him and I used it for a couple of jobs we had
but
that was it. It maybe has been used for about 1/2 hour. I believe I can
borrow it if someone would give me a heads up. I will have to go to San
Diego
to pick it up. Sometimes this type of equipment can also be found used in
the
magazines that cater to the Machine Shop field.
The good thing about this type of equipment is that is very easy to use. If
you can use a toaster you can probably use this type of equipment. On the
other hand it has to be handled carefully as it is electronic.
Dennis if you have an immediate need let me know and I will see if I can
borrow it. I am pretty confident I can. If anyone else has a need for it in
the SoCal area just email me ahead of time and I will try to make it
available.
I worked for Mitutoyo for about five years and my wife worked there, thats
where we met, for about thirteen. She left about two years ago but she still
has some friends there. There is a possibility, no promises, that she could
get permission to purchase one at wholesale or less. Less would depend if
they have a new one being reconditioned. ( a unit sold as new returned by a
distributor or used for demos or for some reason didn't work new out of the
box) Typically they hang on to these units for parts and after a year or so
they then destroy them. Mitutoyo does not usually resell this equipment but
sometimes they make exceptions on a case by case basis.
I also have some digital micrometers and calipers and analog indicators here
at the house if anyone needs to borrow them in the SoCal area. I am more
than
willing to assist anyone with any repairs or maintenance if anyone needs an
extra pair of hands when they are working on their cars. Trying to learn and
don't mind a little dirt and sweat! So when one of those grungy jobs come
along I may be your man! <g>
As a side note the pictures I took at Derrelik <sp>Donuts came out pretty
well everything considered. I am going to have to resend them to Dennis
since
I read of his computer crash.
