Tom,
This question is asked by everyone who does this the first time. And
no, I don't remember the exact method of getting it out, but it DOES
come out. I seem to remember angling it toward the front of the door
and then dropping it out through the lower hole.
Just keep trying... It WILL come out!
You don't have to remove the motor.
You'll probably find that it's the large nylon gear that's going
south. The vendors have a nice brass direct replacement for it that
works better and lasts longer.
