What would Wyss have been able to do differently in the
2 insidences he pointed out? Likely nothing. We that drive
25+ year old cars, I mean really drive them, we all know that
anything can happen. I've personally seen that DeTomaso
racers go through a very high level of preperation, just as I've
seen those of other marques do none. BTW, I can figure that
Wallace had not seen the Car & Drive program on the Pantera,
or the March 2000 european car magazine, or any of the many
good things that has come those of us that have put our cars
at risk by driving them.
In the case I know of which was Dennis' fire, that even if he
didn't run the race and just drove the car home, the same thing
would have happened. It was a problem that 6 men were not
able to detect. Too bad Walace wasn't there, maybe he would
have made the difference. Likely not, but if he was there his
story would have been a bit different. Yet he wasn't there, he
didn't see what preperation was done.
Wyss' point of proper preperation is well meaning, yet his one
example should have read "and no matter how prepared you
are stuff still happens!". He is also right about the press not
covering the uneventful (those that do race and win) while
focusing on the big fire, or major wreck. How true, and his
article certainly proved that.
Every day you drive your car you put it at risk.
