Race
----
[9-Apr-2000-15h44 CET] - Its cold grey and overcast for the
start of the San Marino Grand Prix. Its not raining yet, earlier
it was predicted there was a 60% chance of a down pour during
the race.
As they leave the grid to start the formation lap engineers
are still scurrying around the back of last placed N.Heidfeld's
car. There is a problem with the clutch and they can only
start the car with the wheels off the ground. N.Heidfeld is
pushed back into the pits before the grid returns.
As the lights go out M.Hakkinen blasts away keeping his pole
position, M.Schumacher pulls to the left of the track for the
first corner which puts him right in front of D.Coulthard,
meanwhile R.Barrichello stays slightly to the right side and
draws level with his team mate, as they enter the next corner,
M.Schumacher keeps 2nd and R.Barrichello takes 3rd in front
of the boxed in D.Coulthard. In 5th is birthday boy J.Villeneuve
who made a lightning start from 9th on the grid. J.Trulli is
in 6th from 8th on the grid. R.Schumacher has dropped from
5th to 9th by the second corner. N.Heidfeld starts from the
pits after a long delay.
On lap 2 G.Mazzacane slides off into the gravel but manages
to rejoin. A few laps later H.Frentzen retires in the pits
with a mechanical problem, the engine of J.Button explodes
and M.Gene spins off in the oil leak.
By lap 6 the excitement is over, M.Hakkinen leads M.Schumacher
by 0.9s, R.Barrichello is 9s further back with D.Coulthard
stuck behind him. J.Villeneuve is 3.4s further back with
J.Trulli on his tail.
By lap 24 M.Schumacher is 3.3s behind M.Hakkinen and the gap
to the R.Barrichello/D.Coulthard train is 27.2s. J.Villeneuve
is in 5th 15.5s further back with R.Schumacher 2s behind him
after J.Trulli pits.
By lap 30 the top 6 have all pitted without any change.
M.Schumacher is 4.5s behind M.Hakkinen, R.Barrichello is 29s
behind his team mate with D.Coulthard still on his tail,
J.Villeneuve is 17.4s further back with R.Schumacher right on
his tail.
J.Villeneuve pits on lap 43 and M.Hakkinen on 44. M.Schumacher
puts his foot down in the lead.
On lap 46 R.Barrichello and D.Coulthard pit at the same time.
D.Coulthard just makes it out of the pits in front of
R.Barrichello.
M.Schumacher make a lightning fast stop on lap 48 and rejoins
still in the lead.
Despite closing to within 1.1s of M.Schumacher M.Hakkinen never
looks like passing the Ferrari. M.Schumacher wins with
M.Hakkinen 1.1s further back, D.Coulthard is third 50s later
and has pulled a 38s gap on 4th place R.Barrichello, J.Villeneuve
gets his 2 points birthday present in 5th with M.Salo in 6th.
R.Schumacher retired onto the grass 17 laps from the end with
a mechanical problem.
The best times in each track sector were:
S1: M.Hakkinen - 18.606s
S2: M.Schumacher - 33.257s
S3: M.Hakkinen - 34.235s
The best speeds were:
S1: D.Coulthard - 290kph
S2: D.Coulthard - 223kph
S3: J.Villeneuve - 170kph
So M.Schumacher takes his 3rd win in a row and now leads the
championship by 21 points from team mate R.Barrichello. McLaren
break their duck and jump into second place in the constructors
championship 29 points behind Ferrari.
