Race
----
Its 2pm in Spain, the weather is cloudy and windy,
the air is at 21C and the track surface 23C. The
formation lap for the Grand Prix of Spain is just
starting. In an interview before the race Jean Alesi
said he was hoping for rain, its very cloudy but
rain is not likely. Local man P.de la Rosa will be
starting from the back of the grid because the fuel
he used in Qualifying did not conform to standards,
his Qualifying position was 9th.
The cars make a clean getaway at the start of the
race, M.Schumacher leads into the first corner from
pole with M.Hakkinen right next to him, brother
Ralf makes a brilliant start from 5th on the grid
driving between D.Coulthard and R.Barrichello in
front of him and almost passing down the inside of
M.Schumacher as they enter the first corner, D.Coulthard
tucks in behind the Williams with a slow starting
R.Barrichello behind him. The rest of the top 10
were J.Villeneuve, H.Frentzen, J.Trulli, J.Button
and M.Salo.
Half way around the first lap P.Diniz ends his day
in the gravel, shortly afterwards a charging P.de la Rosa
comes into contact with J.Alesi and they both crash out.
By lap 10 M.Hakkinen was 3.4s behind M.Schumacher
with R.Schumacher 7s behind him, D.Coulthard was still
right on the tail of the Williams and R.Barrichello was
2.4s further back. J.Villeneuve had dropped 13.3s behind
the Ferrari with the next 4 drivers right on his tail.
J.Villeneuve retires onto the grass with flames coming
out the back of his car.
The top cars start to pit on lap 22, by now M.Hakkinen
is just 1.3s behind M.Schumacher, R.Schumacher has
dropped back to 14s behind the McLaren and D.Coulthard
is still right on his tail, R.Barrichello is 1.4s behind
the scot, H.Frentzen is 6th 28s behind the Ferrari.
M.Schumacher pits on lap 24, as he accelerates away the
re-fuelling mechanic is hit by the rear wing of the
Ferrari he falls to the floor injured.
By lap 28 all the top 6 have pitted and the order is
M.Schumacher with M.Hakkinen on his tail, a 16s gap to
R.Schumacher with R.Barrichello on his tail, (R.Barrichello
passed D.Coulthard in the pits), J.Button is 6th 27s further
back.
M.Hakkinen passes M.Schumacher in the pits on lap 41 when
Schumacher makes a long stop (10s longer than M.Hakkinen).
By lap 42 the top 6 have all completed their second stops
and the order is M.Hakkinen 10s in front of M.Schumacher,
D.Coulthard 6s behind the Ferrari with R.Schumacher 3s
behind him, R.Barrichello is 5th 1s further back with
M.Salo 16s behind him.
By lap 47 M.Schumacher obviously has a problem he is 20s
behind M.Hakkinen and D.Coulthard is right on his tail.
D.Coulthard passes him on the next lap.
On lap 49 R.Schumacher catches up to M.Schumacher, for 3
corners the two run wheel to wheel sometimes almost touching,
finally M.Schumacher forces R.Schumacher wide and the ever
ready R.Barrichello slips up the inside to take 3rd place,
M.Schumacher pits again.
By lap 51 its all over, M.Hakkinen is 22s in front of team
mate D.Coulthard, R.Barrichello is 8.6s further back with
R.Schumacher 1.8s behind him, M.Schumacher is 5th 22s
behind with J.Button 11s behind him.
Not quite over, on lap 62 the evil hand of fate once again
kills the engine of Jensen Button just laps from a points
finish. H.Frentzen inherits 6th.
M.Hakkinen wins followed by D.Coulthard, R.Barrichello,
R.Schumacher, M.Schumacher and H.Frentzen. 48 seconds
covers the first 5 places.
The best times in each track sector were:
S1: M.Schumacher - 24.440s
S2: M.Schumacher - 33.558s
S3: M.Schumacher - 26.068s
The best speeds in each sector were:
S1: R.Barrichello - 2774kph
S2: D.Coulthard - 293kph
S3: M.Hakkinen - 276kph
This results means M.Hakkinen takes 2nd in the championship
14 points behind M.Schumacher and 2 points in front of
D.Coulthard. McLaren get a massive boost and close to within
7 points of first place Ferrari, Williams are 3rd 27 points
further back with Jordan 6 points behind them.
These are the comments made by the top 3 in the post race
interview:
Interviewer: Mika, many congratulations. This is your
third victory in a row here, you must feel very pleased.
M.Hakkinen: Yes, I don't know how to explain how pleased
I am. I am over the moon, how you say it ?
Interviewer: You seemed quicker than Michael throughout
the whole race, were you just waiting for the pit stops ?
M.Hakkinen: Yes !!!!
Interviewer: Okay, and moving on to David, well done Mika.
M.Hakkinen: Is that it ? Are you not going to ask anything
else ?
Interviewer: I will come back to you later. David, You are
proving to be an expert at overtaking Michael Schumacher.
Did you have any indication at the time that he was in
trouble ?
D.Coulthard: Well clearly, how quickly I caught him, I knew
that it was'nt his normal pace, so I knew he had a problem
and it was just a question of trying to use momentum as you
catch him to get by. Because even if someone is running 2
seconds a lap slower it can still be quite difficult to
overtake. And it was quite close on his first manoeuvre
he made, pulling to the right I was quite surprised at how
late he made the decision and we came very close to touching,
and at the second attempt I obviously went for the outside
and felt confident I could outbrake him, and despite me
having made a mistake on the first pit stop which is why
I dropped behind Ralf and Rubens. The guys did a good job
to call me in a little bit earlier to get me track position
after the stop.
Interviewer: In view of the events of the past week, has it
been a good thing for you to just get back into a race car
and get down to business ? I understand you have a cracked
rib ?
D.Coulthard: Absolutely, get in the car, drive, do my job
and you know this is the best thing that can happen to the
team and myself to come away from here with maximum points.
Interviewer: Well done David. Ruebens, you benefited from
Ralf and Michael scrapping. Do you feel you owe this podium
to Michael?
R.Barrichello: Well, in a way yes, I must admit that the
race was not good, up to that point, because you know that
you run behind people and even if they are two seconds slower
you just:::: there is no way to overtake so basically my race
was dead I was looking forward when I was in the pit when I
overtook David and I was looking for that again with Ralf but
as far as I am concerned I think the team had a problem with
Nigel who was putting the fuel in and then my pit stop was
quite slow so then I lose for both and my only chance was when
I saw we were approaching Michael and I was lucky to drive by
both.
Interviewer: Michael ran over Nigel Stepney in his first stop,
do you know how Nigel is ?
R.Barrichello: They just told me that he has a problem with
his leg, but I just hope it is not too bad.
Thank you Rubens.
Interviewer: Back to you Mika. You are now 14 points behind
Michael in the championship. As we go to Nurburgring, do you
consider the world championship to be wide open ?
M.Hakkinen: Before I answer that question I want to say one
thing ; I would say I think the boys did a fantastic job
today, for the pit stop that we did today; it was just
amazing, like you saw when we were coming together with
Michael for the pit stop and they just did a brilliant job,
you know, changed the tyres, just like they should and they
did a fabulous job and I was very pleased and I want to say
thank you for that, great team work, and to answer your
question its a long way to go to the end of the season and
anything can happen and today was a good example and I am
looking forward to the next Grand Prix and the next test,
we have a lot of work to do and I am happy we have learnt
a lot this weekend, and a lot about this car and I believe
we can make it much quicker for the rest of the season.
Many congratulations Mika.
