2nd Free Practice Session

Its 9am in Monaco the sun is shining, the air is at 24C and
the track surface 30C. The first 45 minute part of todays
final Free Practise session for the Grand Prix of Monaco is
just begining.
We understood there could be a small delay before the session
starts as the medical car just crashed on its practise laps
so they are moving all the equipment to a spare car. In fact
everything started on time.
09:00:23: Its 9am, the session opens and everyone streams
out onto the track
09:03:00: Everyone streams back into the pits having completed
a single trip around the track. Just M.Schumacher has not left
the pits yet.
09:03:34: M.Schumacher heads out of the pits.
09:05:15: The sun is still quiet low so much of the track is
still in shadow. The sky is a little hazy but that will clear
as he sun rises further. M.Schumacher returns to the pits at
the end of his tour.
09:05:38: No times yet, everyone is back in the pits.
09:08:02: The only time available from the installation laps
is the Sector 2 (S2) duration. M.Hakkinen was fastest in S2 at
42.569s, D.Coulthard second at 42.573s. M.Schumacher was 48.507s.
09:08:36: G.Mazzacane, M.Gene and M.Salo are back on track.
09:09:23: G.Mazzacane puts in the first fast time of the day
at 1m 38.171s-3Laps, M.Salo takes 1st at 1m 36.245s-3L

13:02:58: Boris Becker and Ari Vaatenen are with Mika
13:04:24: Everyone playing it cool in the pits
13:04:58: Michael is sitting by the pit wall watching the stars walk by
13:06:08: R.Zonta is the first car on track
13:07:38: Due to his accident R.Zonta missed Monaco last year which
must make him one of the most experienced rookies.

Post Qualifying Interview
These are the comments made by the top 3 in the post qualifying
interview:
Interviewer: Welcome to the top 3 qualifying drivers at the
Monaco Grand Prix for the year 2000 - Michael Schumacher,
Jarno Trulli and David Coulthard. Michael, the first three
runs you went quicker each time. The fourth run I think you
eased off. Mika Hakkinen qualified in 5th, is this the perfect
session for you?
M.Schumacher: You should say yes, honestly, with Jarno being next
to me and Mika being 5th, it's a good starting base honestly for
us tomorrow. Even though it will remain a very tough race,
because the race is very long and you just need to go for a good
start and I will have my competitors right with me again. I would
obviously wish having a couple of guys between them and me, but
I think that it is just a dream. So lets think about reality and
we will see a very tough race tomorrow.
Interviewer: Now watching you on the monitor, it seemed a couple
of times you were very close to the wall, or even hit it during
those runs. Did you have a brush with the barriers ?
M.Schumacher: I thought they needed some repainting! So we did a
bit of a job on that! David told me, I did'nt know actually. I
knew I was twice very close in the first run. The car wasn't
perfectly balanced at this stage and I just kissed it.
Interviewer: Thanks Michael. Jarno, many congratulations - your
best ever qualifying. Are you surprised to be here?
J.Trulli: Well, a little bit, honestly, I did not expect to do so
well in qualifying, because I had so many problems during the
weekend, especially the first day, I lost the first session because
I had problems with the front suspension so I had to change
completely the front suspension, the balancing and I was struggling.
If you take a look at the free practice, I was step by step
improving, but very slowly, because I was in the beginning very
far, but then this morning and yesterday we worked very well and
step by step we get closer to the best drivers and then in the
qualifying I did'nt really expect to be on the first row, but I
was expecting to be in the top 6. Honestly the car is very good
and I must say a very big thanks to all of the guys which are
working for me, because they are doing a very good job.
Interviewer: How difficult was the traffic out there?
J.Trulli: Well I have lost 2 laps for the traffic and so I used
only really two sets of tyres especially because I did found BAR,
and I think Mclaren. Mclaren I found it right on my last run which
was pretty good, especially in the first sector, but I could not
close it so I did come back and I was a little bit upset. But
anyway the first row is very good - it is very good for me and
very good for the team and then getting better and better and more
confident with the car and the team, which makes me feel even
confident for tomorrow's race.
Interviewer: Thanks Jarno. David, you looked good all weekend, you
were fastest this morning, and you were top of the time sheets
early on, how much of the track did change and improve during the
session?
D.Coulthard: I didn't actually feel the track improved a great deal,
I think you just get more into running the car and find out where
the track is with the increased temperatures which we see this
morning. So it was a just a case of finding a clear lap, finding
your limit and adjusting the car to suit.
Interviewer: Now, you qualified 3rd, Mika is 5th, and I believe
you are one of the few teams to choose the harder of the two tyres.
Is it this too big a sacrifice of qualifying pace for the race?
D.Coulthard: The race is still the most important - that's where
the points are. So it remains to be seen if we can make up some
places. But, you know, we made our decision based on what we felt
was the best all round package and only time will tell whether we
made a good decision or not.
Interviewer: Thanks David. Michael, you mentioned the start. I believe
yesterday at Fiorano you were testing your starts Did you learn
anything new?
M.Schumacher: You have no chance to practice any starts down here
at the weekend, so its just an opportunity to settle in and get used
to it and make a couple more practice. We haven't tested anything
new over the last couple of starts or through the year we have made
fairly consistent starts except Imola and I believe we are on top
of most of it.
