Race
----
Its 2pm in Monaco the weather is bright and sunny with an air temperature
of 24C and the track surface at 42C. The formation lap for the Grand Prix
of Monaco is just starting.

As the lap begins M.Schumacher spins his wheels to lay rubber on his grid
position they all stream off up the hill except for Pedro Diniz who is
stuck to the grid with a car problem. He finally gets going as the rest
of the field are rounding the harbour.

As they pull onto the grid the engine of A.Wurz lets go in a cloud of
smoke. The start is halted and A.Wurz is pushed into the pits. The spare
Benetton car is setup for G.Fisichella so the Austrian will have to watch
the start from the pit wall. Benetton mechanics try to reconfigure the
spare car but do not have enough time before the second formation lap
begins.

Once again M.Schumacher lays rubber on his grid position as they depart
for the second formation lap.

The grid reforms without incident and M.Schumacher blasts away into the
lead as the starting lights go out, the top cars all keep their grid
positions as they pass St Devote and head up the hill.

As M.Schumacher enters Casino Square a Red Flag - Abort Race signal is
shown on the FIA timing screens, the marshals do not Red Flag the race.
At the Loews hairpin J.Button touches the rear wheel of P.de la Rosa
causing him to spin and block the track. 8 cars are stuck. Now marshals
Red Flag the leaders as they approach the Swimming Pool. The cars stop
on the grid again. The confusion continues as still no one seems to know
why the race was originally Red Flagged. The Red Flag is definately
required now as the track is totally blocked at the hairpin. Drivers get
out of their cars on the grid and take a drink while others start running
from Loews to get back to the pits before a restart.

15 minutes later and the third formation lap is about to start. P.de la Rosa
does not make the restart, M.Gene, R.Zonta, N.Heidfeld, J.Button and P.Diniz
must all start from the pit lane.

For the third time M.Schumacher lays rubber on his grid position as the
partial grid blasts off for their next formation lap. The grid reforms and
away they go.

At the end of the first lap the top 5 have kept their grid positions,
M.Schumacher is first followed by J.Trulli, D.Coulthard, H.Frentzen and
M.Hakkinen. R.Schumacher is 6th from 9th on the grid, 7th is J.Alesi
followed
by R.Barrichello and G.Fisichella.

By lap 10 M.Schumacher has pulled out a 10.3s lead over J.Trulli,
D.Coulthard
is running right on the Jordan's gearbox 0.4s further back but cannot pass.
H.Frentzen is 3s further back with M.Hakkinen 1s behind him and R.Schumacher
1s behind him.

On lap 17 J.Button retires in the pits and one lap later A.Wurz crashes head
on into the tyre wall at St Devote.

By lap 20 M.Schumacher has a 20s lead over J.Trulli, D.Coulthard is 0.7s
further back with H.Frentzen 2.5s behind him. Like his team mate M.Hakkinen
is stuck just behind a Jordan and R.Schumacher is 0.9s behind him. There are
19 cars still running.

By lap 30 G.Mazzacane has crashed at St Devote, J.Alesi has retired with a
car problem and P.Diniz is just about to retire on the hill upto the Casino
after touching the rails. M.Schumacher is 28s in front of J.Trulli who still
has D.Coulthard stuck on his tail. H.Frentzen is 4.4s further back with
M.Hakkinen on his tail. R.Schumacher is 6th 1.6s further back and
R.Barrichello
is 7th by 3.9s. 17 cars complete 30 laps.

On lap 36 the Jordan of J.Trulli gives up. Now its up to D.Coulthard to try
catch M.Schumacher. On the next lap R.Schumacher crashes at St Devote. He
injures his leg and has to be taken away on a stretcher.

By lap 40 M.Schumacher is 33.6s in front of D.Coulthard, H.Frentzen is 5.5s
further back with R.Barrichello 4.5s behind him. M.Hakkinen had car problems
and had to pit early. M.Hakkinen is currently in 12th over 1 lap behind the
leader. There are 13 cars running and 6 have been lapped.

By lap 50 M.Schumacher has pitted and is still 7.6s in front of D.Coulthard
who has not. H.Frentzen is 15s further back with R.Barrichello right on his
tail, G.Fisichella is 5th 9.7s further back and E.Irvine is in 6th although
in the pits. There are 12 cars still running and 5 have been lapped.

Disaster strikes on lap 55 when M.Schumacher suddenly slows. He heads for
the
pits and retires. D.Coulthard takes the lead.

By lap 60 D.Coulthard is leading H.Frentzen by 17.8s, R.Barrichello is 1.8s
further back with G.Fisichella 7s behind him. E.Irvine is in 5th 23s further
back and M.Salo is 6th by another 18s. M.Hakkinen is 7th some 6s behind
M.Salo.
There are 11 cars running and just 7 on the lead lap.

H.Frentzen crashes out just 8 laps from the end when he bounces off the
barriers near St Devote, M.Hakkinen spends time on the gearbox of M.Salo but
a car problem causes him to drop back. D.Coulthard takes the flag with
R.Barrichello 16s behind him and G.Fisichella 3s further back. E.Irvine is
4th followed by M.Salo and M.Hakkinen. 9 cars finish the race with the first
5 on the lead lap.

The best times in each track sector were:
S1: M.Hakkinen - 21.160s
S2: M.Schumacher - 36.815s
S3: G.Fisichella - 23.246s

The best speeds in each sector were:
S1: M.Salo - 204kph
S2: M.Hakkinen - 200kph
S3: M.Hakkinen - 257kph

This win puts D.Coulthard second in the championship table 12 points behind
M.Schumacher with M.Hakkinen 3rd by 5 points. McLaren are creeping up on
Ferrari in the constructors championship now being 2nd by just 5 points.
Williams are 3rd 48 points further back.

Race Interview
These are the comments made by the top 3 in the post race interview:
Interviewer: Welcome to the top three finishing drivers in an
incident-packed
Monaco Grand Prix 2000 - David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello and Giancarlo
Fisichella. Many congratulations David, your 2nd win of the year, your 8th
win overall, I believe completing your own personal grand slam.

D.Coulthard:: Absolutely. I have always said there is a few big Grand Prix
for me personally that I like to win and that is Spa, because it is my
favourite track, British Grand Prix, which is my home Grand Prix, Italian
Grand Prix, because there is nothing quite like an Italian crowd for Formula
1 and Monaco, because it is technically one of the most challenging and
difficult tracks for any driver and okay I benefited today from problems
with Michael and Jarno, but that is Monaco and I think I have had my share
of bad luck over the years. So I am quite happy to take this one today.

Interviewer: You said it was a lucky win, but when you were that far behind
Michael and Jarno, did you think you could get through either of them?

D.Coulthard:: Yea, I thought there was an opportunity to get past Jarno. It
was just a question of how far down the road Michael would be. The car felt
good and Pat and Paul my two engineers did a great job and set up and made
an adjustment on the grid and that really helped the balance, so I was able
to run quick lap times as and when I wanted to. Okay, Michael had a big
lead, but obviously that took a toll on his car and you have got to have
a reliable car and you have got to keep away from the barriers and today
I was able to do that, and McLaren gave me the car to do it.

Interviewer: Now interestingly, since Michael went out with a suspension
failure, I know that in the past McLaren bought tougher suspension
components.
Did you do it again this year?

D.Coulthard:: To be honest, I am not sure, because I have not done the last
few tests since Barcelona, so it could have well been some different
suspension, but I didn't ask the question, there is no need for me to know
that. You don't go and try and hit barriers anyway, but clearly they built
a car that was strong enough to go the distance for me and I don't know what
Mika's problem was, but nonetheless it is a great day for my side of the
garage and for the whole West McLaren Mercedes Team.

Interviewer: You are now very firmly in 2nd - you are 12 points behind
Michael
still and 5 points ahead of Mika and more importantly you seemed over the
last few races to be gaining the upperhand. Do you feel you now have the
psychological advantage over your team mate and, more importantly, do you
think you now deserve to get the more focused attention that Mika got for
the
last 2 years, when he established the lead?

D.Coulthard:: Well, first of all, Mika is a 2 times world champion, so that
must be a fair confidence boost to one's mind to have 2 world championships
under your belt. But I have never been at all psyched by his achievements,
or
Michael's, or whoever it happens to be that I am competing against, because
you know personally I have just been working towards achieving my maximum
and
improving as a driver, you know that I have always said that I still feel
that
I've got more to give and I think that slowly, as my confidence grows, I am
giving more and more all the time, so as that happens I will expect more
from
the team, but today, obviously, there are no complaints. It is a great day
for
us.

Interviewer: David, thank you. Rubens, many congratulations on a very
hard-earned
2nd place, but both of the starts were very bad for you. Was there a
problem?

R.Barrichello:: Actually the start wasn't too bad, I was just blocked with
people in front, I had to brake and you know Ralf made a very good start
from
the outside, so I had to back off, so I lost time with that and
unfortunately
that was the story. I mean I had such a bad qualifying - I took the wrong
decision
for qualifying and I was penalised with a bad start as well and the race was
catching up the whole time. I was conserving the tyres and fuel for much of
the
time. It was unlucky that we didn't do one more lap than Frentzen, because I
would have caught him, so I think we were really faster than him, but then
you
know he had maybe good tyres at the end and I was just catching up again.
Once
I almost went into the barriers before the tunnel but I was pushing,
pushing,
pushing and then at the end Ross told me to back off because we had a
problem.
So we had to keep low revs, but you know apart from that it was a good race
catching up the whole time, proving that qualifying just went wrong.

Interviewer: Rubens, thank you. Giancarlo, when I spoke to you on the grid a
couple of hours ago you told me there was no way that you would be on the
podium. How do you feel?

G.Fisichella:: I was not optimistic obviously, but now I am very pleased
about
the result. The target was to score some points, obviously my dream was to
get on the podium and now I am 3rd, it is fantastic. We did a very good job,
especially this morning in the warm up and I found out a very good set up
for
the race and there was very good balance, apart from the last 10 laps, no I
think when I did about 45 or 46 laps. I had a puncture in my rear tyre so I
did my first pit stop 10 laps before the normal and I lost 7 or 8 seconds,
but
then at the end with the new tyres and, well, after the 1st pit stop I was
quite confident there was good balance and I was pushing very hard and was
quite quick and I was catching Rubens.

Interviewer: Thanks Giancarlo and back to David. We move on now to Canada,
which has been a circuit historically Ferrari have been very good at, and in
fact McLaren have been very very close, how do you feel going on there ?

D.Coulthard:: I feel very positive going to Montreal, its a track that I
think
I have particularly gone well in the past, although I have broken down twice
whilst leading the race. So hopefully luck is changing and its a good track
for
me personally and I expect it to be close with Ferrari again. It is going to
be close all year, so stay tuned !

Interviewer: Thanks David.
