THe bigger the shunt, the less current takes the hard way threough the gauge,
and the lower the needle reading. Make it bigger if you wish, but I agree
with Mike: sounds like a high resistence developed at the left side
connection. Be sure to re-insulate before you're through: those hot terminals
are dangerously close to other ground-points when the panel is buttoned
