Its 11am and a bright sunny day in Monaco, the air is at 21C
and the track surface a blistering 39C. The first 60 minute
part of todays first Free Practise session for the Grand Prix
of Monaco is just starting.
11:01:31: R.Zonta, M.Gene, J.Alesi and P.de la Rosa are first
out on track
11:03:50: We now have 11 cars on track non of the top drivers
yet
11:04:42: R.Schumacher and D.Coulthard hit the track
11:06:10: M.Hakkinen leaves the pits as D.Coulthard returns
11:07:23: Just J.Trulli, H.Frentzen and M.Hakkinen on track,
Everyone has been on track except for Ferrari and Jaguar
11:08:15: E.Irvine is now the only car on track
11:10:47: This circuit is completely made of normal roads.
There is no rubber on the surface yet so the grip will be
very delicate.
11:12:44: G.Mazzacane is the only car on track and he improves
his 1st to 1m 36.033s-4Laps
11:13:18: G.Mazzacane improves 1st again to 1m 34.554s-5Laps
11:14:42: G.Mazzacane improves again to 1m 33.070s-6L
11:16:56: G.Mazzacane improves his 1st to 1m 31.689s-7L, only
another 10s to go. He is joined on the circuit by J.Verstappen
and N.Heidfeld.
11:17:35: G.Mazzacane is back in the pits
11:18:34: N.Heidfeld puts in his first time at 1m 37.551s-3L
11:18:54: J.Button is on track
11:20:19: Just J.Button, R.Zonta and N.Heidfeld on track.
N.Heidfeld takes 1st at 1m 30.122s-4L.
11:22:41: J.Button takes 3rd at 1m 32.121s-4L
11:24:03: J.Button takes 2nd at 1m 31.669s-5L
11:26:36: N.Heidfeld improves 1st to 1m 28.503s-8L, J.Button
improves his 2nd to 1m 29.038s-6L, M.Gene takes 3rd at 1m 30.856s,

11:48:14: The Arrows of J.Verstappen also spins just before the
tunnel but he manages to keep off the walls.

11:51:43: J.Alesi takes 3rd at 1m 24.919s-9L, M.Hakkinen's next lap
is a steady 1m 32.325s-5L, D.Coulthard's last lap was in the 1m 26s
range.
11:52:57: D.Coulthard takes 1st at 1m 24.134s-6L, M.Hakkinen takes
2nd at 1m 24.432s-6L.
11:53:39: M.Schumacher takes 1st at 1m 23.352s-9L.
11:55:39: J.Button is 5th fastest at 1m 24.768s-18L There are 15
cars on track including both Ferrari's and McLaren's.
11:56:22: G.Mazzacane slides at Rascasse and breaks off his front
wheel against the inside of the hairpin.
11:57:00: N.Heidfeld pulls off the track at St Devote with gearbox
problems.
11:58:05: M.Schumacher improves his 1st to 1m 23.286s-11L.
11:58:15: 17 cars on track for the final few minutes.
12:00:16: E.Irvine spins at St.Devote and keeps going.
12:00:50: The chequered flag is out to signal the end of the session
12:01:20: Top three are: M.Schumacher, M.Hakkinen and D.Coulthard.
12:02:08: J.Alesi stops on track just before the Swimming Pool on his
way back to the pits.

Its 1pm and a bright sunny day in Monaco, the air is at 23C and the
track surface a blistering 43C. The second 60 minute part of todays
first Free Practise session for the Grand Prix of Monaco is just

13:03:04: G.Fisichella is one of the first on track.
13:05:04: Puffs of smoke come from the back of the Benetton of
G.Fisichella. As he takes Rascasse the smoke turns into a cloud as
flames blow out the back of his engine. He returns to the pits.
13:05:36: M.Hakkinen and D.Coulthard take to the track.
13:06:19: M.Schumacher takes to the track.
13:09:16: R.Schumacher locks up going round the Loews hairpin.
M.Schumacher takes the top time in S1, M.Hakkinen takes the top
time in S3. Next lap M.Hakkinen takes the top in S1 and M.Schumacher
takes the top in S2.
13:09:41: M.Schumacher improves 1st to 1m 22.590s-16L, M.Hakkinen
improves 2nd to 1m 22.642s-14L.

best times in all track sectors. P.Diniz crashes heavily against
the Rascasse.

13:48:44: J.Alesi and M.Hakkinen are on fast laps. J.Alesi is sliding
around a little.

looks like A.Wurz is not going on track again today.
13:55:26: With 5 minutes left 9 cars are on track all in the top 11.
13:56:04: D.Coulthard has a little slide as he passes St Devote.
13:57:46: M.Schumacher returns to the pits as M.Hakkinen goes out.
D.Coulthard loses his fast lap when he comes up behind R.Schumacher
starting his fast lap.
13:59:07: R.Schumacher takes 7th at 1m 22.906s-24L. R.Barrichello is
way back in 10th at 1m 23.197s-34L. R.Zonta spins at St Devote.
13:59:45: With seconds left M.Hakkinen takes the top time in S1.
14:00:23: M.Hakkinen takes 1st at 1m 21.387s-28L.
14:01:23: D.Coulthard is on a fast lap but comes up behind a slower car.
