This is the dreaded amp gage fire problem. 
   It seems that the gage develops an internal medium resistance
(probably due to corrosion) to the main battery power running thru it,
and then turns into a mini toaster.
   It's capable of burning your car to the ground, so for safety's sake,
disconnect the negative lead from the battery ASAP, and don't reconnect
until the problem is solved.
   Gary Hall has a replacement on sale which has been reworked to
eliminate this problem, and if memory serves, it is on sale now.
