Ken,

I forgot to mention. I'd recommend using an epoxy primer like PPG's DP
series (different colors) in a contrasting color to your primer/surfacer
so that you will be sure not to sand through it. Unlike most primers
which are porous and thus prone to letting moisture through, the DP is
not. And it apparently sticks like crazy (I didn't use it, wish I had,
found out too late). You can, with proper prep, apply filler over it.
Also, I prepped most of my surfaces with Rass-O'-Nil (very thin coat
applied with scotch bright and wiped off with paper towels before it
dried). This may be overkill with the epoxy though.
