I went through the archives because I asked the same question in 1997 when my other car did the same thing and found a sort of incomplete answer. What causes the "snap, pop" retort on trailing throttle? Which gasket is it EXACTLY that is allowing air into the exhaust, causing unburned fuel to ignite? The gasket between the header and the block? When the motor in my '72 was rebuilt, all new gaskets were used of course so this phenomenon went away. Some people said they thought they liked this sound, but I'd like to get rid of it.
There were also some funny posts back then - Mike Drew telling us about a motorcycling trick where you turn the ignition off, pump the throttle a couple times, then turn it back on and spit a huge flameball out the exhaust. Jack DeRyke telling us about how you can split your exhaust wide open doing this, (ask him how he knows this...) Some things don't change!!
