We were in Charlotte, NC visiting our son Jeff and had an opportunity to
stop by the 20th anniversary Mustang and All Fords car show in Charlotte on
September 30th. I had hoped that I might see some Charlotte Panteras but
no luck. There were at least one hundred cars and some very nice Mustangs
with Clevelands. What I found interesting is that most of the Cleveland
cars were 2V engines. Some how I thought most Mustangs with Clevelands
would be HO 4V engines. It seems like waste to spend so much time and
money (matching numbers and all) and end up with a big V8 and a two-barrel
carb. The matching numbers is a big, big deal with these Mustang owners.
The workman ship on the cars was really super. The Pantera owners must be
scavenging all of the 4V engines!!
We tried to get Jeff's Malibu in the show by telling them it had a 351
Cleveland engine but I guess they could see around the blower and noticed
that the distributor was in the back. When we pulled in, the sound of the
Malibu with the four-inch exhaust and radical engine, stopped the show.
It's great, even Ford fans can get excited over a really radical chevy.
Another thing that I learned is that adding a little more RPM to the right
engine can make an amazing difference in engine power. While Jeff's engine
was new he had the rev limiter set at 6000 RPM and his shift light at 5000
RPM. You never run an engine with a blower without a rev limiter. With
this setup we clocked 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds. Now that the engine has some
time on it he moved the rev limit to 7000 RPM and the shift light to 6000
RPM. The results are amazing! I didn't try to clock the 0 - 60 because
the G forces literally take your breath away. The acceleration is
absolutely brutal and almost scary! And I normally love acceleration! I
thought I was going to gray out. You can see the Malibu at
