If the cam failed and caused subsequent damage to the crank (or pistons, or
rods, etc.), it's certainly not the crank manufacturers fault.

While this is perfectly clear to the person who bought all the parts, it
seems an incredibly complex notion to the person who built and sold the bad
part. At least on things that are inexpensive enough that you won't sue
their butts off. That's a relative number which is basically the dollar
figure of the damage divided by the number of vendors involved and their
insurance deductable or legal staff.
