Hahaha...We go thru this with a lot of customers. Everyone knows that someone
can build that engine for under $9,000. But the difference is the
professionally built engines tend to last longer than the home built ones.
How many people have a $40,000 Dyno at their homes? Or a $15,000 honing
machine or for that matter a $10,000 valve grinding machine? Or, at least
$5,000 worth of checking, measuring and balancing equipment in their
basements. What you are paying for is someone else's experience and knowledge
to assemble and run the engine.
And for the most part the professionally built engine will last longer than 3
months, even under racing conditions.....Unlike some homebuilt engines that
barely last thru warm-up or a month of street driving...
As far as the $9,000 for the 500 HP engine, that is about list price for
everything, or what the guy probably paid the engine builder. The unfortunate
thing about used racing parts is that they are only worth about 50% of their
initial cost. That is what we sell our used stuff for. So, that engine is
actually only worth about $5,000. We can sell you a 1 season old complete all
out dry sump racing engine with over 625 HP for about $12,000 ~ $15,000, but
these were $25,000 to $30,000 engines when new.
