This 'urban legend' is right out of the '30s, when gas was 60 octane & hard to find. The theory was, the napthalene in std. mothballs would up the octane of the weed-killer they used for gas (napthalene is a type of modified benzene molecule). Didn't work well then, doesn't work now.
