I have to wonder if the high RPM clutch slip is more of a problem with a very
high RPM engine. I think it's the torque not the HP that is the issue. While
the HP may continue to climb above 5000 on the engine Mark described, I doubt
the torque does. On the "monster motor" Pantera, maybe the torque continued
to raise above 4500. And, if the clutch was slipping due to massive torque
about 5000 RPM, I'd expect it to be pretty obvious, i.e., the RPM would shoot
up, but no acceleration to go with it.
I'd think there are several other answers. Years ago I one put a Hooker side
exhaust system on a 435 HP 67 Vette. But, I ordered their quiet mufflers. The
car took off like e rocket, but at some RPM I can't remember, the power went
away. I switched to glass packs, and it fixed everything.
There are of course other things. If the loss of power is immediate, maybe
the power valve, or some other single point failure. But if the power loss is
gradual, maybe the cam timing? Not jetted right, ignition giving out, etc.
I'd probably go to a dyno tune shop that knows Holleys, and get them to do
their magic. It seems that most people don't go this route because we hate to
spend a couple bills for a tune up, But everyone who has done it seems to
think it was money well spent. In your case, I imagine you'd get a quick and
correct diagnosis, and the money would be well spent.
