Chance:

1) By all means buy a welder! :)   Metal glue guns are fun.

2) This happened to me also.  I drilled and tapped the hole
   for a 5/16 NF and this solved the problem.  Thats what the 
   previous owner had done on another hole and it seemed to work
   just fine.
