Flashback to 1986, I'm stationed at March AFB for an exercise called Gallant
Eagle. I have a rental car and am on my way to Disneyland on a day off. I'm
travelling on some freeway, I forget which one, somewhere between Riverside and
Anaheim.

The rental car speedo goes to 85 and pegs. The traffic is moving briskly, the
speedo on my rental is pegged. I'm in one of a few center lanes. I figure we're
doing about 85 or 90 and I'm just keeping up with traffic. The speed limit is
55.

A larger-than-life, Black and White patrol cars passes the lot of us, no lights,
no sirens.... like we are standing still. No one gets pulled over. I look down,
the speed is still pegged, and there's nowhere to go, until I find my exit and
get off.

A few days later, I'm stuck at a standstill in bumper to bumper cars, stopped on
the same freeway.

So I guess the "average" speed is about 55.
