In Melbourne the air is at 19C, the Albert Park track surface
is at 24C, the sky is blue and the sun is shining. Another
great day in Oz! Its 11am in the morning and the first 60
minutes part of todays Free practise session for the Grand
Prix of Australia is just starting:
11:00:48: The circuit opens and new boy E.Bernoldi leads them
out onto the track in his Arrows
11:02:35: 19 cars are on track M.Schumacher is still putting
on his helmet, the best S2 so far is J.Verstappen at 26.674s
11:02:59: Everyone returns to the pits, just M.Schumacher,
R.Barrichello and J.Button have not been out
11:05:01: J.Button heads onto the track - no lap times yet
11:05:56: M.Schumacher is on track
11:08:07: Everyone in the pits except R.Barrichello
11:09:51: Best S2 so far os M.Hakkinen at 26.078s, M.Schumacher
was 32.310s, K.Raikkonen was 33.581s
11:11:21: Time for some work as T.Marques, J.Verstappen,
L.Burti, J.Alesi, E.Bernoldi, N.Heidfeld and O.Panis take to
the track

Its 1pm in Melbourne, the sun is shining and the sky is blue,
the second 60 minutes part of todays first Free practise
sesison for the Grand Prix of Australia is just starting:
In the first 60 minutes last years pole has already been
beaten into the ground, J.Alesi and J.Villeneuve have had
big car problems, J.Montoya is the best new boy, K.Raikkonen
did ok in his 24th car race, and McLaren, Ferrari are well
ahead of the rest.
13:00:38: O.Panis is the first out on track follwed by
E.Bernoldi and J.Verstappen
13:03:01: M.Hakkinen is on track with 7 others
13:04:44: J.Villeneuve and J.Alesi are on track
13:07:02: M.Schumacher is on track, the engine of T.Marques
blows up on track
13:08:48: R.Barrichello is on track, J.Alesi takes 16th at
1m 33.869s-8L, J.Villeneuve takes 19th at 1m 34.780s-10L,
N.Heidfeld takes 6th at 1m 31.518s-22L. The top 6 are now:

13:35:09: SESSION STOPPED
13:36:58: The session has been stopped due to L.Burti
spinning into the wall which has left his Jaguar car in
a dangerous position. L.Burti is OK and the car is being
removed.
13:39:11: L.Burti just put his inside rear wheel over the
grass which caused the car to spin as he accelerated out.
Unfortunately the spin was stopped by the wall on the outside
of the track.
13:40:49: The SESSION CONTINUES
13:42:19: H.Frentzen, J.Montoya, F.Alonso are on track
13:46:17: E.Irvine improves his S1 and S2 but not his S3
13:47:02: J.Alesi, N.Heidfeld and J.Button all improve in
S1 and S2
13:48:23: J.Button takes 20th (!) at 1m 33.403s-18L, J.Alesi
takes 8th at 1m 31.089s-19L and N.Heidfeld takes 5th at
1m 30.523s-31L. The top 6 are now: R.Barrichello, M.Schumacher,

13:49:54: K.Raikkonen improves his S1 and S2 but not his S3,

- 4 Germans in the top 8!
14:02:04: R.Schumacher takes 5th at 1m 30.277s-37L
14:03:12: N.Heidfeld retires in the gravel
14:04:41: Very nasty crash for M.Schumacher, he has spun off
in a big way, his Ferrari went into the gravel side ways, the
wheels dug in and the car rolled over and over ending up by
the tyre wall, he got out OK without help.
14:06:01: J.Trulli takes 2nd at 1m 29.267s-35L, the top 6
are now: R.Barrichello, J.Trulli, M.Schumacher, D.Coulthard,
M.Hakkinen, R.Schumacher
14:07:08: The flag is out and everyone ends their final laps
with yellow still being signaled near the crash of M.Schumacher
14:08:56: Everyone returns to the pits.
At 14:09 the top 6 are:
R.Barrichello 1m 28.965s 40 laps
J.Trulli 1m 29.267s 36 laps
M.Schumacher 1m 29.284s 28 laps
D.Coulthard 1m 29.324s 38 laps

14:22:07: So ends the first day of 2001. Pole 2000 has been
beaten by over 1.5s. M.Schumacher, N.Heidfeld, L.Burti and
T.Marques all broke their cars. R.Barrichello was faster than
M.Schumacher, D.Coulthard faster than M.Hakkinen and O.Panis
faster than J.Villeneuve. Jordan, Sauber and Williams all
look good, K.Raikkonen is faster than J.Montoya, J.Button
did not have a good day in 21st and neither did Jaguar in
13th and 18th. Tomorrows another day.
