This was the initial tire that I considered. However, I saw no way to fit
it "in" the wheel well. Same holds true for a 12.5" rim. I could certainly
fit them if I was ok with the tire protruding outside the wheelwell.
However, aside from my subjective observation of a compromised appearance,
you may have to raise the ride height to prevent tire contact with the top
of the fender well when the suspension is compressed. And with a large
enough tire, I do not know if you could raise the car high enough.
To be a universal fit for Pantera's, I would suspect Marino may be going
with no more than 6.5" of backspace. Pantera's currently running 335's on
6.5" BS (11" wheels) are already rubbing the framerail in spirited driving.
My car has a frontspace measurement of ~ 5.25" for a total of 11.75" if you
employ 6.5"BS (5.25 + 6.5). Keep in mind, the lip on each side of the
wheel is .5", and wheel widths are measured from the mounting surfaces.
Thus 11.75" equates to an 10.75" rim. This is why an 11" rim appears about
max on a non-flared car. Now, a 12.5 in rim actually measures 13.5" at it
outer lip, and thus, assuming 6.5" BS has a FS of 7" with the rim protruding
1.75" (13.5 - 11.75). The tire being around 14" wide sticks out a bit more.
A local Pantera has 11" wheels with a FS of 6.1875 and the wheel/tire combo
protrudes almost an inch from the top of the fender well. However, if you
examine the outline of the Pantera's fender well, you will notice that it
tapers in significantly as you move to the rear of the car. In essence the
car gets narrower. The upshot is that while this wheel protrudes from the
top of the fender well, it is in line with the fenderwell behind the door
above the rocker panel. Looking down the front of the car toward the rear,
the tire is barely visible. However, observed from the rear forward, the
tire sticks well outside the fenderwell. Potential interference with the
fender aside, some may find this look acceptable. I doubt many would
appreciate the look if extended outward any further and a larger wheel would
force that issue. While our cars are all a little different, that fit I
must see to believe. Caveat emptor
