That is an interesting comment about high octane fuel.   My wife's Nissan
Maxima will adjust to lower and higher octane by detecting knocking and
retarding the timing.  The higher octane fuel results in no knocking, the
engine does not retard the timing and provides more performance.  I believe
this is an advertised feature of the Maxima and I think a lot of the newer
cars might do the same thing.  It also has dual tuned paths in the intake
manifold (long and short paths) with a valve that changes the air path
depending on the engine RPM.
