You take an old set of steel valve covers that you don't use anymore and
don't mind trashing.  You then cut a nice large rectangular hole in the top
of each cover so that you have exposed the adjusting nut on all rocker arms.

You then install the covers with some old gaskets and a touch of black
permatex 2B.  Start the engine and adjust away.  When done, wait for all
the oil to drainback, carefully remove the covers, clean the areas, and put
your "real" valve covers back on.

This saves from making a really big mess, and allows you to make the
adjustments while running.

Keep the cut up covers for future use.
