Two things to know about he early A/C boxes. First, the heater and
evaporator cores are in reverse order so that hot air blows over the A/C
core. The effect of this is that if you turn the heater and A/C on at
the same time, you have to leave the A/C on full blast to keep the
condensed water on it frozen. Otherwise, instant fog on the windows
(assuming it's cold outside). Second, the blower/fan assembly is
completely different and doesn't blow as hard. Also, since the vent is
on the down stream side of the blower, at low speed, the blower probably
blows air out of the vent.
All of this is why I upgraded Zonkey (#1549) to a newer box. If any
wants my old one, It's available. I plan on fitting a sliding cover to
the vent hole in the body so that fresh air will be able to come in.
Come to think of it, do the newer cars even have this hole? If not, the
old box won't fit with the vent on as the cowl area has a stamped recess
for it at least 1 1/2" deep and about as wide as the A/C box.
