The Race
--------
:France:Race: Its 2pm at the Magny-Cours circuit in France and the
formation lap for the Grand Prix of France is just starting. The
weather is bright and sunny with the air at 27C and the track surface at
46C.

It is understood M.Schumacher has some clutch problems with his
car, up until a few moments ago mechanics were still working on the
Ferrari while it was on the grid.

The lights change and the formation lap begins. Well for most
people anyway, poor Mika Hakkinen is left stranded as the field cruise by.
Mechanics push the McLaren back into the pits and Mika gets out -
the end of his Grand Prix.

Half way around the formation lap P.de la Rosa suddenly slows when
his Jaguar loses power, he limps it back to the pits as the field form
up on the grid.

As the lighs go out R.Schumacher makes a great start from pole and
leaves the others standing, he pulls into Turn 1 way out in front.
M.Schumacher just manages to keep his grid 2 position as he fights off
Coulthard (grid 3) into Turn 1. Montoya (grid 6) passes Trulli (grid
5) into 4th before Turn 1.

At the end of the 1st lap its R.Schumacher, M.Schumacher,
Coulthard, Montoya, Barrichello (from grid 8), Trulli, Frentzen, Villeneuve,
Raikkonen, Heidfeld.

Villeneuve retires on lap 5 with a car problem, Heidfeld moves up
to 9th and Panis 10th. The first 3 are tight together but the next 3
have 1.2s gaps separating them.

By lap 20 R.Schumacher is 2.1s in front of M.Schumacher, Coulthard
is 1.8s further back with Montoya 5s behind him, Barrichello is 5th by
1.5s with Trulli 11s behind him. Raikkonen has pitted dropping him
to 14th and Irvine is in 10th.

Irvine passes Panis and Barrichello pits on lap 21 dropping from
5th to 7th, Heidfeld also pits dropping from 8th to 11th.

R.Schumacher pits on lap 24 while leading M.Schumacher by 3s, he
rejoins in 4th.

M.Schumacher pits on lap 25 while leading Coulthard by 1.1s and
rejoins in 3rd keeping in front of R.Schumacher.

Coulthard pits on lap 26 while leading Montoya by 2.7s and rejoins
in 4th. Unfortunately he went too fast in the pit lane and picked up
a 10s stop and go.

Montoya pits on lap 30 while leading M.Schumacher by 2.4s, he
rejoins in 5th.

By lap 31 all the top ten have pitted, M.Schumacher leads
R.Schumacher by 7.2s, Coulthard is 3rd by 1.1s with Barrichello 2s behind
him.
Montoya is 5th followed by Trulli, Heidfeld, Frentzen, Irvine and
Raikkonen.

On lap 32 Coulthard takes his 10s penalty and drops from 3rd to
5th.

Barrichello makes his 2nd stop on lap 36 and drops one place to
4th.

On lap 42 Irvine finally passes Frentzen into 8th after a great
battle.

R.Schumacher pits on lap 44 while in 2nd and rejoins in 5th.

M.Schumacher pits on lap 45 while leading and rejoins in 2nd behind
Montoya.

Montoya and Coulthard pit on laps 50 and 51 then Barrichello makes
a 3rd stop on lap 54.

Montoya's Williams gives up on lap 52 while in 4th, Irvine's
Jaguar does likewise on lap 55.

No further changes in the final 16 laps, M.Schumacher leads brother
R.Schumacher by about 15s for most of the time, Barrichello stays
about 6s further back with a frustrated Coulthard staying about 0.6s
behind him but unable to pass. Trulli comes home 5th with Heidfeld in 6th
taking the last point. The rest of the top 10 are Raikkonen,
Frentzen, Panis and Burti taking over Alesi's usual 10th place. 15 cars
finished the race.

This result sees M.Schumacher further expand his championship lead
to 31 points over Coulthard with R.Schumacher passing Barrichello
into 3rd by 1 point some 16 points behind Coulthard.

In the constructors championship Ferrari are now 52 points in front
of McLaren with Williams closing in 3rd just 13 points behind.
Sauber is 4th just 1 point in front of Jordan.

Post Race Interview
-------------------

Interviewer: Congratulations gentlemen, a very entertaining race,
Michael Schumacher, maybe the perfect result for you, not only your
fiftieth win, but you have your brother alongside you on your podium and
your team-mate, Ralf Schumacher second place and Rubens Barrichello in
third. Michael, quite a surprising win, not because you were slow on
the track but before the race Ross Brawn said to us that you had a
clutch problem on the grid, did it affect you at all?

M.Schumacher: I would say yes I mean I almost lost the position
against David, we came very close in the first corner, I was inside he
was outside so I kept it going until we see what happened in Turn 3, but
he pulled off already in Turn 1 so the line was clear but it was
quite close, I mean very close to lose it and imagining being behind him
and then working with the strategy would have been far more difficult
so it was ideal to be behind Ralf although he was very fast in his
first stint and then it all happened!

Interviewer: Now Ralf came in for his first pit stop ahead of you,
then you came in and you came out ahead because Ralf seemed to have a
problem, did you have any problems thereafter because you looked as
though you had the race under control?

M.Schumacher: I think our strategy worked better honestly, it
was`nt because Ralf had a problem I guess at least from what I have seen
(Ralf looks at his brother Schumi, mutters something, then turns away
and sticks his finger in his left ear!) because they stayed out longer
to my view so it means more fuel, longer pit stop and we a bit shorter,
my second set was really very good, I was really flying, I did have a
little bit of a problem with my third set, I was`nt as fast anymore
as I was with my second, so we will find out what`s going on there but
anyway it`s the perfect result as you said before in Canada we had
one two Ralf and myself and now we have one two myself and Ralf, and
Rubens next to us, a bit unexpected I guess for Rubens, coming from where
he came, he did a perfect race so obviously for Ferrari a very good
day.

Interviewer: Indeed, thank you very much Michael. Ralf, as we just
mentioned before you seemed to have a problem with one of your... the
changing of one of your rear wheels at the first stop.

R.Schumacher: Yeah they had a pit stop problem that`s why we lost
position I guess in the first place, but in the second stint my set did
not work at all so I mean I was so slow really I was losing
everything and I had to come in earlier than expected, so I couldnt... if I
would have come out in front of Michael I think it would have been very
difficult to hold him behind me so I am... I can be actually happy to
sit here in second today because it was a disaster and really difficult
to drive.

Interviewer: You were running a different set of tactics to your
team mate Juan Pablo Montoya, did he only manage to get close to you
because you had this problem with your second set of tyres?

R.Schumacher: Yeah I am sure because in the first stint I went away
from him it was just the second stint I mean shame that he had a
technical problem, I don`t know what he had but otherwise he would have
finished even in front of me I guess.

Interviewer: Thank you very much Ralf. Rubens you started eighth
on the grid, you managed to pass both of the Jordans on the first lap,
obviously Mika Hakkinen didnt get to take the start, are you surprised
come the end of the race you started eighth you are up here in third
palce?

R.Barrichello: Well I guess a little bit but in a way you know I
sorted out my problems that I had yesterday in qualifying, qualifying
was horrible for me, I never really knew what was going on, the car was
overshooting some places and undershooting the other places, this
morning the car felt a lot better, and I was going really well in my
first stint saving a lot of fuel at that time, and Ross came on the radio
and said would you like to try a three stop and I said I think so, its
a good idea because you know then I could be quick on the track the
whole time and you know by my doing 2 stops I might only finish in
front of the Jordans so let`s try, and I think it was a really good try
and you know I thank the team very very much because it was a hell of a
race.

Interviewer: But when Ross Brawn made that decision, had Mika....
David Coulthard come in for his stop/go penalty because obviously that
must have had an effect, because for the last fifteen laps of the
race you had to fight incredibly hard with David right behind you?

R.Barrichello: Well I had my first three sets of tyres were really
good, the last one I think blistered the rears so early and that was
the problem, I could`nt brake for Turn 5 and I was struggling a lot, I
mean a couple of times David almost pulled the car alongside me but I
was able to hold on, and I think you know started from eighth
finishing third is a good achievement.

Interviewer: Thank you very much Rubens. Back to you Michael,
Silverstone next stop, you have a thirty-one point advantage, can you ever
start to think about the possibility of winning a fourth world
championship?

M.Schumacher: Unfortunately for you guys I am a bit too realistic,
we have seen last year being thrown out by two races behind each other
how quickly things can turn around again, although you have to be
honest, it`s a very comfortable lead we are in now but it`s still seven
races to go, seventy points to give away so there is no reason to
start celebrating before it`s done, and until mathematically nothing is
secure I will keep fighting as we have done today.

Interviewer: Michael thank you very much.
