From: (none) Subject: Irritating Squeak Date: (none)
Ok, so it's not exactly a squeak, but i can't think what else to call it right now... the rounded plastic hood over the instrument cluster occasionally decides to rub against the adjacent dashboard panels and make an extremely irritating rubbing/scratching kind of noise. for some unknown reason, this doesn't usually happen "right away", it often doesn't happen until i've been driving for an hour or two. but once it starts rubbing and making the noise, it doesn't seem to stop until the end of the trip. the rubbing seems to be happening on the left side, since i can make it stop if i hold it in place while i'm driving (don't have enough hands to hold it all the time, though :-) when i let go, though, it continues to make the noise. i'm not sure if it might be related to temperature or humidity (it happens both in the summer and winter). so, has anyone had this happen, and if so, have you found the cure? do i spray in some silicone lubricant maybe? it doesn't happen on my wife's Miata (yet, anyway). for what it's worth, mine is a '90 (hers is a '91). once it warms up again, i plan to pull the dash apart to see what i can do, but any suggestions would be welcome in the meantime.
