The Road to Indy - Day 0 Sacramento, CA Friday June 3, 1994 Greetings all, It's late. Saturday morning really, but who's checking. The countdown is almost over. In a few hours my part of the adventure will truly begin. The powerbook is rented and the communications software loaded. The modem has been tested and we're "on the air" with fax and data. I've made the packing list (3 pages) and I'm checking it twice. I've got all the necessary items. Camera, computer, R/C Miata, plenty of CD's. The wash bucket is loaded with goodies and the helmet's in the trunk. Bansel the Bear keeps telling me he's ready. All that remains is to finish packing a few incidental items. Like underwear, toothpaste... you know. Tomorrow/today the BAMOANs (SAMBAMs?) begin their trek. 2500 miles, mostly two-lane U.S. 50, the less-traveled highway. San Jose (Do you know the way?) to Indy. Three Reds and Two Greens to start with. Fate, and maybe a few Miatas too, will meet us along the way. The BRGs are already on the road. Carol and Leon from Livermore along with Bill and ??? from ???. They left Livermore after lunch and are spending the night in Carson City. Two Reds are asleep in Navato. Wayne and Jan from San Jose are spending the night at Motel Escover, run by Tom and Harriet. I'm at home in Sacto. Finally. It all began for me a year ago when I bought my first Miata. (I have since purchased a second for my parents.) The complimentary issue of the Miata Magazine I received had a chapter club spotlight featuring SoCalm. Highlights of the article described the SoCalmers trip to Indy I. As a motor racing fan, I was hooked and knew I had to attend the next Indy event. Since then I have become very involved in SAMOA, my local club, and Gold Rush, which we put on. But I still knew I had to go to Indy. When I found out that the Indy chapter was organizing a repeat, Miatas at Indy II, I called up immediately. At that time the event was not even guaranteed. Finally in February I got my application. In March, after much suspense I received my confirmation #127. I was in. I made sure everyone knew well in advance. I'm going to Indianapolis in June. June has arrived, so what am I doing? I went to Napa tonight (about 70 miles each way) to visit old friends now living in NY. I was planning to take the truck and leave the Miata packed at home. I'm glad I didn't. The evening was gorgeous and perfect for top-down motoring. Six of us bowled until midnight. Eventually I wound up parked on in the middle of a vineyard staring at the stars. Wonderful people, a magical car. Memories to treasure. I made it home by 3:00 am, and finished packing. Now for a two-hour nap. Tomorrow it begins. Until next time, Ciao. David D./Redfire #:<{)>
