In Maryland the DOT/MVA has begun implementing new emissions test procedures. It seems they now put the car on a dyno/treadmill where the car is tested under a load (i.e., driving) for emissions testing. While I have no doubt in the Miata's ability to pass this type of tesst easily I am concerned about the testers. The policy is that the vehicle must be surrendered to the test staff who then operates it inside the facility. While I typically don't have a problem with other people driving my car, early news report (and home video) show that more than a few of the test staff either can't drive manual trannies or don't drive them well. Can anyone here provide some reassuring words of wisdom that will help me trust these people with my car? It seems that some other people have some similar concerns about surrendering their cars, too, and have filed a lawsuit against the procedure claiming it is unconstitutional to require we unconditionally surrender the car without due process or some such thing.... -alex-
