This behavior seems to be relatively characteristic of the car
(maybe that's why some people have referred to it as "character"
).  In any event, a number of people have used synthetic
transmission oil, and found considerable improvement, while 
others have found minimal improvement.
I replaced the tranny oil with Redline MTL and found that the
1-2 shift was much better as well; other netters have used
other products.
