     A few folks did not believe my original assertation that it's illegal
to drive with ones parking lights only while in California.

Here's the relevant section of the CVC:

CALIFORNIA CODES
VEHICLE CODE
SECTION 24800

24800.  No vehicle shall be driven at any time with the parking
lamps lighted except when the lamps are being used as turn signal
lamps or when the headlamps are also lighted.
