Thanks a bunch to all of you who responded on my catalytic converter
woes.  I'll give that rascal (mazda dealer) a call next week & see what
I can find out about a cc recall.

One thing that perhaps wasn't clear in my original note: the rattling
started at about 45k miles or so, but I didn't get around to taking it
in until it had about 52k, because that's when I heard about the heat
shield problem.

So, maybe it is a little bit my fault for not getting it into the shop
before the 50k tick on the odometer, but still, 52k ain't that far away
from 50.
