I threw away the washer on the first oil change.  I use a couple of
wraps of plumbers teflon tape on the oil drain plug.  The only time I
have ever had a leak was a couple of changes ago when I felt guilty and
bought and used one of the washers.  It didn't go on straight, bent and
allowed a leak.  I took it out, threw it away also and went back to the
teflon tape...no problems.

I do everything that Bill does with the exception of the teflon tape 
application.  No washer .. no tape .. no leaks.
