To establish a baseline for future modification I dyno'd my 1997 Miata at the stock advance and at 14 degrees BTDC. The car has no AC and is totally stock except for a custom exhaust from the catalytic converter back(to allow the spare to be mounted under the car). I can't speak for the absolute accuracy of the dyno but the relative numbers here should prove interesting to those contemplating changing their advance. Any higher advance pinged terribly in upper RPM's on the premium gas I was running and the power was no better in the lower RPM range. I only get the "weekly digest" of this mailing list so my responses will be delayed accordingly. Rear wheel hp at 2 different advance settings: advance: rmp stock 14BTDC 2500 42.4 46.6 3000 52.5 56.2 3500 61.3 64.6 4000 69.5 72.9 4500 78.5 81.7 5000 92.3 94.4 5500 103.1 105 6000 107.9 109.7 6500 112.5 110.9 (wierd dip???) 6900 108.2 109.2 (this dyno does not behave well at 7000 so we ran at 6900) So is a few hp worth always running premium? I don't know but no matter how you look at it, it is cheap horse power. dk
