[DeTomaso] most people running 600cfm carb?

I agree, smaller carbs might be right for street driver, it is all a
compromise. If you drive in the lower RPMs then sticking with the smaller
cfm will definately provide crisper response. And it will definately help
with mpg. Annular discharge will also help with the larger carb and will
recover a lot of the feel on the low end.
I find that when I drive the beast, I spend more time in the higher rpms. It
is a "bad" but enjoyable habit I developed with my 1800cc 78 Fiat Spider and
now apply to the 351c in the Pantera. Since I only drive the car on weekend
outings for fun, MPG is not a great concern...fun is. Many are afraid of the
RPMs, and it does take some experience to know what gear to go to to keep
the RPMs in the power band and with the larger carb, the RPMs must be
maintained. I might suggest that your friend was "afraid" of the RPMs, and
failed to sustain them when he raced. Low RPM torque and drivability
suffers, but if the engine noise of 7K does not scare you away, it is a heck
of a ride.

Enjoy, L8r Ben #1910
