FW: [DeTomaso] a front shock/spring clearance problem

I guess I made it sound like I would lower my car even further in front if
not for the contact between the spring collar and adjustment knob. That's
not really true. The front of my car is very low already, to the point that
if I went lower I'd have tire contact with the underside of the fender at
full compression (which would occur at the track). The current spring perch
position gives me a little more than 3" ground clearance at the front
center. The top of the roof is 41" high.
If the car was any lower, I couldn't drive it on the street or at the track.

I spent a bunch of time on the phone with Aldan about a year ago when I
was looking at the spring/shock issue.
The bottom line is that Aldan shocks come in different lengths. The
one they sell for Panteras, unless you specify otherwise, provides for
a slight lowering of the front of the car compared to stock. But if
you really want to go low, you need to get a shorter shock. Otherwise
you run into the problems you two are describing--you can only crank it
down so far before something hits and limits you.

I have triple adjustable Aldan shocks. I have the front spring perch
as low
as it will go without hitting the lower shock adjustment knob. I don't
have
any clearance issues with the suspension though.
Gary Hall sold (still?) Aldan shocks with bigger spring perch collars so
that the original diameter Pantera springs would fit. These collars are
significantly larger than the normal 2-1/2" (I think) Aldan springs. In
fact, Aldan lists a Pantera shock with big spring perches in their
catalog.
You can order the smaller diameter perches and springs (direct from
Aldan)
and install them on your current Aldan shocks if you have the Hall stock
spring 'specials' you want to swap out.

I always wondered why the aftermarket springs and shock collars were so
much
bigger then the rears that Hall sold with the Aldan shocks I boughjt 5
years
ago. . .I've lowered the front of my Pantera as far as I can go
without the
that front Hall shock 'collar' on the bottom of the shock hitting the
suspension.
Before I go to Dick Drenske, Aldan and/or others to fix the problem
I'm
curious if anyone on the List with the Aldan adjustable shocks with the
Hall
collars and aftermarket springs has 'fixed' the problem.
