[DeTomaso] Priming Oil System

I agree that for a new engine build, the oiler shaft is much better as it
fills all the oil passages before the engine turns. I have an oiler shaft
just for that purpose. But for an engine that's just been sitting for a
winter, spinning it with the starter to fill the filter and build oil
pressure before actually firing it up seems perfectly exceptable. I've done
it many times with no ill effects.

Spin the oil pump drive shaft with a drill.

DO NOT DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN THAT IF YOU LIKE YOUR ENGINE..

;)

Especially if this is a new build.

I use a remote starter switch to spin the engine without actually firing
the ignition (key off). My MSD 6AL and MSD billet distributor don't
seem to mind, especially since they aren't powered up. Alternately, you
can get a pre-oiler shaft that temporarily replaces your distributor and
spins the oil pump via an electric drill.

The remote starter switch is much easier to install and remove though.

Hi all,

I'm getting ready to fill the cooling system back up and fire up the car
this
afternoon and was wondering about cranking the engine without it
actually
staring to get oil back up into the engine after sitting all winter. I
have an
MSD 6AL and an MSD distributor and I thought I had read that it will
freak out
the MSD box if you just remove the coil wire and crank the engine over.
Did I
misunderstand, or is there a better way to get oil up into the engine?

Thanks, John #5616 - Raising Pantera Awareness in Wyoming!
