I just had my 72 pre-L Pantera painted yellow. After spending a lot of money
and time, I have come to the conclusion that PPG does not really have an
EXACT match for the original 1971-72 Pantera yellow.
The way paint is made has just changed too much. I used the following advice
from Garth Rodericks which I found very helpful. He has a yellow Pantera
used in the movie called Banzai Runner that has never been repainted.
I used the 81020 PPG Amherst Police Yellow in Omni and I'm quite happy with
it. It is according to Garth, a yellow tone similar to the color of his car,
but a bit lighter.
I suggest that you buy a pint and let your painter spray you out a large
paint chip, say 6"x6" and then decide if you like it.

with 3 different PPG paint dealers, and all provided the same information
regarding the numbers changes...
Yellow 81945 (1971-1974) is "Amherst Police Yellow." It's
been replaced by a new number - 81020. It is available in PPG
"Omni" in a single stage, which is a low-end paint. I don't
know about 2-stage, but it's not available in PPG Concept. My
car still wears its original paint, which is this color. But,
since was only available in a low-end paint, I didn't buy it.
Instead, I took my front hood to the dealer and he scanned it
with a colorimiter and mixed the PPG Concept accordingly. >>

Subject: [DeTomaso] 1971 yellow paint code
Since we are on the topic of paint codes. Would anyone know the correct code
for yellow of a 1971? My car is in the resto shop also for a respray. They
plan on using PPG materials.
Thanks, Dan
