[DeTomaso] Big Bend Open Road Race Report

OK, a quick BBORR results summary. The 'Overall' finish is vs the complete
field of 140 cars over the entire 118 mile course (two legs of 59 miles).

Michael Frazier and Jim Cooper, 72 Pantera --> 3rd Overall, 1st in
100 MPH Class, 0.004- mph (0.176+ sec) off target speed
Carter Boyer and George Cabaza, 95 Cobra-R    -->   4th Overall, 1st in 110
MPH Class, 0.005+ mph (0.168- sec) off target speed
Steve Hawkins and Fred Foreman, 72 Pantera --> 15th Overall, 6th in 110
MPH Class, 0.014+ mph (0.476- sec) off target speed
John Taphorn and Bob Taphorn, 73 Pantera --> 31st Overall, 6th in
100 MPH Class, 0.029- mph (1.253+ sec) off target speed
David Bell and Kathyn Bell, 72 Pantera --> 35th Overall, 2nd
in 105 MPH Class, 0.037+ mph (1.438- sec) off target speed

You can see that Steve Hawkins & Fred Foreman (110 MPH) and John & Bob
Taphorn (100 MPH) had terrific times but ended up in unbelievably
competitive classes (both Steve/Fred and JT trophied at BBORR last year).
In fact, the first three finishers in 110 MPH ended up in a technical tie at
0.005 mph off the target speed. Carter Boyer won the class based on his
time being 0.006 seconds closer to a perfect score than the next best time.
Can you imagine winning a 118 mile race by 0.006 seconds? I did a quick
calculation and figured that Carter's winning margin at 110 MPH was slightly
less than one foot. Incredible!

These ORR regulars are very, very good. My personal lesson for the day is
to never run in the same speed class as Michael or Carter as they're going
to automatically reduce the number of available trophies by one each.

Many thanks to Michael Frazier for taking the time to tutor the rest of us
poor pedal-to-the-metal clutzes on how to be competitive.
