A wide tire can help protect a wheel from curb rash.

I am running 305/50-15 on a 10" Campy.  It is about as big as you can go on
a stock narrow body.

I have seen 305/50-15 tires on 8" wheels.  It looks a little odd.  I would
guess that it is not all that safe either, but I really don't know.  Greg
Jacobs ran at Thunderhill with that set up and did not die, so I guess its
not all that bad.
