Mine is THPNMD04033 July 1972.

One of the cars I looked at during my search was a 72 pre-L (#4164, Ron Hanner was the seller) in Los Gatos that the seller advertised (and told me was) as an August 1972 car. I think this car ultimately sold to someone in New York. Does anyone on the right coast know the car? It would be interesting to see the complete vin. Maybe someone can check the registry to see if it's listed.

  Cheers!
  Garth

That would be gettin close to the last pre-L made, because the first L type was 4269!

For your database... Mine (#4033) has a build date of 7/72.

I found I have VINs from July 72 in my database. have no Aug 72 cars
though. That would be THPNME.
I wonder if there are any made in August.

I guess maybe it's:

That means that the 72 model was only made from April-July 72 when the line
was shut for vacation and changeover to "L type??? Our 72 pre-Ls are getting
very rare!

Hey Garth
Thanks for your answer and for asking Mike about it.

I'm inclined to agree with yours and Mike's assesment. I wonder what the VIN
# is for the last 71 model made in 1972?

I guess all the "L" types made after Sept 1/72 could probably be called 73
models. They are very different than the pre-Ls. Most manufacturers start
production of the new year's model about then anyway.

That means that the 72 model was only made from April-June 72 when the line
was shut for vacation and changeover to "L type??? Our 72 pre-Ls are getting
very rare! Almost like pushbuttons!!!

This is getting more interesting all the time. Comments Mike?

there any truth to my response, or am I full of it and mis-stated that the
car
is a 71 model. Inquiring minds want to know. >>
>>>Well, technically it is a '72 model by virtue of the fact that it was
built in '72 and titled as such.
But there was an undocumented changeover in March '72 between what we
commonly know of as the '71 cars (square bumpers, flat decklid etc.) and the
'72
Pre-L (cars like ours). The differences were more than skin deep--the
chassis was
substantially changed as well.
So to be technically correct, the car in question would probably be termed a
'71-spec 1972 car.

FYI - Mike Drew's opinion on the issue of me referring to this car as a 71
model. Works for me.
